False Spring Got Me Good – Now We’re Back in the 20s!
Y’all, I got tricked.
Just last week, it felt like spring was here to stay—the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and I was out there like a fool, confidently planting my tomatoes in the ground. Now? We’re back in the 20s, and I’m staring at those poor little plants, wondering if they have what it takes to survive my overly optimistic gardening decisions.
I should have known better. There’s always that false spring, where it warms up just enough to make you believe it’s safe to start planting, only for winter to come barreling back in, laughing at your hopefulness. But here I am, mulching like crazy, trying to insulate my garden and crossing my fingers that the tomatoes pull through.
Seed Trays, Seedlings, and a Whole Lot of Mulch
While the weather outside is unpredictable, my seed starting station is absolutely packed. Trays upon trays of seedlings are happily growing under lights, waiting for their turn in the garden. This is one of my favorite parts of the gardening season—watching tiny seeds sprout and turn into strong little plants, full of promise.
Speaking of seed trays—y’all really showed up for our Presidents’ Day and Valentine’s Day sales! I was blown away by how many of you grabbed our reusable seed trays from All About The Garden, and I love knowing that so many of you are starting your own gardens this season. It makes me so happy to see others taking control of their food and learning that, yes, you CAN grow what you eat—even on a small scale.
Keeping the Garden Covered and Cozy
With this sudden cold snap, I’m back in full-on mulching mode. If it’s not nailed down, it’s getting a layer of mulch. Mulch is like a warm blanket for your soil—it helps keep the temperature stable, retains moisture, and suppresses weeds. So, while my tomatoes are out there wondering what happened to the sunshine, at least they’ve got a cozy little layer of protection.
So, what’s next? We wait. We watch. We hope. And if my tomatoes don’t make it? Well, that’s just part of the journey. Gardening is a constant learning experience, and sometimes that means rolling with the punches (or the unexpected frosts).
For now, I’ll keep tending to my seed trays, dreaming of warmer days, and reminding myself (again) that just because it feels like spring doesn’t mean it is.
Until next time, stay warm, keep planting, and let’s grow something amazing together! 🌱💚
